1940s. From scientific Latin Ryania, name of a genus of tropical American plants (M. H. Vahl Eclogae Americanae I. 51; from the name of John Ryan, 18th-cent. British physician and botanist + scientific Latin -ia) + -ine, with apparently arbitrary insertion of -od-.
