Late Middle English; earliest use found in Regiam Majestatem. From classical Latin pollicitātiōn-, pollicitātiō a promise from pollicitāt-, past participial stem of pollicitārī to promise + -iō; compare -ation. Compare Middle French, French pollicitation.
