From French rétorsion act of turning around, reversal, act of retorting, probably from Middle French retorquer to return, turn back, retort + -ion, after Middle French torsion. Compare post-classical Latin retortion-, retortio. Compare Catalan retorsió, Spanish retorsión, Italian ritorsione.
