A city and port on the southern coast of Vietnam; population 5,929,500 (est. 2009). As Saigon, it was the capital of the French colony established in Vietnam in the 19th century and became the capital of South Vietnam in the partition of 1954. The name was changed to Ho Chi Minh City in 1975.
