Late Middle English (in an earlier sense). From post-classical Latin mensalis from classical Latin mēnsa table + -ālis. With mensal line compare Anglo-Norman ligne menselee and Middle French, French ligne mensale. With mensal land compare post-classical Latin terra mensalis.
