词汇 Holter monitor
释义

Definition of Holter monitor in US English:

Holter monitor

nounˈhōltər ˌmänədərˈhōltər ˌmänədər
  • A portable device that continuously records the rhythm of the heart, typically for 24–48 hours, by means of electrodes attached to the chest.

Usage

A Holter monitor may be fitted to a patient by means of a strap worn around the neck or over the shoulder. This is so suggestive of the way that a halter is worn that it is not surprising that many people, including some healthcare professionals, believe they are correct in calling the device a halter monitor. However, the name refers not to the way device is worn, but to the man who invented it: Norman J. Holter.

Origin

1950s: named after Norman J. Holter (1914–83), the American biophysicist who invented it.
