  • A member of a Jewish sect, in existence by the 2nd cent. a.d., said by St Isidore to have believed that the Scriptures were not all inspired alike by God, and supposed by some modern scholars to have believed that God was not a single being.

Origin

Mid 16th century; earliest use found in Original and Sprynge of all Sectes. From post-classical Latin merista (636 in Isidore as the name of a sect) and its etymon Hellenistic Greek μεριστής divider, distributor (New Testament; in Justin Martyr as the name of a sect) from the stem of ancient Greek μερίζειν to divide + -ιστής.
