  • Designating a chronological cycle proposed by Callippus as an improvement on the Metonic cycle, consisting of four Metonic cycles (amounting to 76 years) less one day, at the end of which it was thought that the full moon and new moon would be brought round to the same day and hour as at the beginning of the cycle; of or relating to such a cycle.

Origin

Mid 17th century; earliest use found in John Rowland (fl. c1658). From post-classical Latin Calippicus, Callippicus from ancient Greek Κάλλιππος, name of a Greek astronomer (370 b.c.- 300 b.c.) + classical Latin -icus.
