  • A small crisp variety of dessert apple, brightly flushed and formerly much valued for its decorative qualities.

Origin

Late 17th century; earliest use found in John Worlidge (d. 1693), writer on agriculture. From French pomme d'api, apparently from French pomme + de + Appius, the name of a Roman who is said by Pliny to have grafted the apple on a quince stock, after classical Latin mālum Appiānum (Pliny).
