(1884–1951), US biochemist, born in Germany. He worked on the biochemical processes involved in muscle action and provided the basis for understanding the process by which glucose is broken down to provide energy. He shared the 1922 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with Archibald Hill (1886–1977).
