  • A diagrammatic or systematized representation of the chromosome complement of an individual, species, or other group of organisms, indicating the number of chromosomes and their lengths, arm length ratio, centromere position, banding pattern, etc.; = "karyotype". Later also: a similar diagram of the structure of a single chromosome, indicating the position of bands, particular loci, etc.

1920s; earliest use found in Genetics. From idio- + -gram, after Russian idiogramma.
