1920s. From ancient Greek ῥαθυμία (or ῥᾳθυμία) light-heartedness, easiness of temper, laziness, indifference from ῥάθυμος (or ῥᾴθυμος) light-hearted, easy tempered, indifferent (from ῥᾶ (or ῥᾴ) easily + θυμός spirit, temper: see thymoleptic) + -ία.
