词汇 dogdrave
释义

Definition of dogdrave in English:

dogdrave

noun ˈdɒɡdreɪv
  • A marine fish used for food. Now historical.

Origin

Middle English. Origin uncertain. With the first element compare later Dutch dog, †dogge, probably ‘kind of fish, cod’ and also Anglo-Norman doghestave, probably ‘kind of fish’. The second element is probably related to Middle English draghe, variant of draw; compare Old English draege, post-classical Latin draga, both in sense ‘dragnet’, and also earlier dray-net; compare also draught, drag, drag-net. In some forms apparently influenced by Old English drāf, Middle English drafe, draffe, variants of drove (goes to classical Latin drava, drova, drove road), although these are not attested in senses associated with fishing. In some forms after draught.
