Early 19th century; earliest use found in The North American Review. From classical Latin mīrābilia marvels (used by Cicero also of supernatural phenomena, and in Vetus Latina and Vulgate and frequently in patristic writers of miraculous events of divine causation), use as noun of neuter plural of mīrābilis. Compare Italian mirabilia.
