  • A type of colourless spirit in the Balkans distilled from various ingredients, including grape pomace and plums, and often flavoured with herbs or other aromatics.

Origin

Late 18th century. From Serbian and Croatian rakija (from Turkish rakı), apparently originally via Italian rakia. In later use also from its equivalent in other Balkan languages, e.g. Bulgarian rakija, Macedonian rakija, and Albanian rakia (definite form of raki); compare also Romanian rachiu.
