Late 18th century; earliest use found in Richard Chandler (d. 1810), classical scholar and traveller. From Hellenistic Greek παναγία (used from Origen onwards of the Virgin Mary), feminine of πανάγιος all-holy from ancient Greek παν- + ἅγιος holy.
