1930s; earliest use found in American Journal of Philology. From pan- + chronic, after French panchronique (F. de Saussure 1913 in this sense, in Cours de Linguistique générale i. iii. 138; earlier in sense (of species) showing no notable variation in their biological structure across geological timespans).
