Origin

Middle English; earliest use found in Statutes of the Realm. From Anglo-Norman purpoint, Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French pourpoint, porpoint, variant of parpoint, perpoint, apparently from post-classical Latin perpunctus, etc., use as noun of past participle of perpungere to pierce, punch through from classical Latin per- + pungere.
