1920s. From Angloromani (Welsh Romani) mochadi taboo, unclean from Romani maXadi (also as måχadī), feminine of maXado, lit. ‘smeared’ (with reference to menstrual blood) from late Sanskrit mrakṣati (third person singular) smears.
