Early 19th century. Irregularly from classical Latin adīre to approach, to come into (an inheritance) + -ation; compare classical Latin aditiō act of taking possession of an inheritance. Compare Dutch †aditie (rare) acceptance of an inheritance and Afrikaans adiasie (probably from English). Compare also Dutch aangaan, use as noun of aangaan to accept (an inheritance). Compare slightly later adiate.
