  • Attributive and in the genitive, especially in "Molisch (also Molisch's) reaction", "Molisch test". Designating or relating to any of various biochemical tests for the presence of sugars, carbohydrates, or proteins in solution, in which α-naphthol (or for sugars, α-naphthol or thymol) reacts with the substance in the presence of sulphuric acid to give a violet colour (with α-naphthol) or a red one (with thymol).

Origin

Late 19th century; earliest use found in George Gould (1848–1922). From the name of Hans Molisch, Czech botanist working in Vienna, who described the test for sugars in 1886.
