Early 20th century; earliest use found in Frederic Edward Clements (1874–1945). From classical Latin socius socius, with ending modelled after that of speciēs species: see quot. 1916 (in which Clements's assumption is that classical Latin socius and sequī ‘to follow’ are cognate).
