Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Horace Bushnell (1802–1876), Congregationalist minister and theologian. From molossus + -ic, probably after post-classical Latin Molossicus or Hellenistic Greek Μολοσσικός (in ancient Greek designating the breed of dog).
