Origin

Old English; earliest use found in Bald's Leechbook. Cognate with of formed similarly to Dutch aardgal, Old Saxon erthgalla (Middle Low German ērtgalle), Old High German erdgalla (German †Erdgalle) from the Germanic base of earth + the Germanic base of gall, after classical Latin fel terrae, so called on account of its bitter taste.
