Late Middle English (in an earlier sense). From Anglo-Norman and Middle French infortune (French infortune) misfortune, bad luck, mishap from classical Latin infortūnium, with remodelling after fortune. Compare Catalan infortuni, Spanish infortunio, Portuguese infortúnio, Italian infortunio.
