Late 19th century; earliest use found in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London. From scientific Latin Monimostylica, group name from ancient Greek μόνιμος stable, stationary + στῦλος pillar, support + scientific Latin -ica, neuter plural of -icus.
