  • The note immediately above the mese; the lowest note of the higher of a pair of disjunct tetrachords; (in the Greater Perfect System) the lowest note of the third tetrachord from the bottom. Hence occasionally: the fifth string (counting from the bottom) of an eight-stringed lyre (now rare).

Early 17th century; earliest use found in Philemon Holland (1552–1637), translator. From ancient Greek παραμέση the string above the mese, the lowest note in the higher of a pair of disjunct tetrachords from παρα- + μέση.
