Early 17th century; earliest use found in John Yates (d. 1657), Church of England clergyman and philosopher. From post-classical Latin praedamnation-, praedamnatio act of condemning in advance, condition of being already condemned (late 2nd cent. in Tertullian, with reference to divine judgement) from classical Latin praedamnāt-, past participial stem of praedamnāre + -iō.
