  • Any of several palms of the genus Mauritia, native to Trinidad and northern South America; especially the ita palm, M. flexuosa, valued as a source of fibre, timber, and wine. More fully "moriche palm".

Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Mayne Reid (1818–1883), novelist and children's writer. From American Spanish moriche from Carib morisi, perhaps related to Tupi mburíti.
