From classical Latin emptiōn-, emptiō act of buying, purchasing, thing bought, purchase, deed of purchase from empt-, past participial stem of emere to buy (from the same Indo-European base as Old Church Slavonic imati to seize, collect, Lithuanian imti to take) + -iō.
