Origin

Late 15th century; earliest use found in The ix ladyes worthy. From classical Latin praefulgent-, praefulgēns shining more brightly, outstanding, use as adjective of present participle of praefulgēre to shine with outstanding brightness, to be outstanding from prae- + fulgēre to shine. Compare Spanish prefulgente.
