Late 16th century (in an earlier sense). From classical Latin praenōtiōn-, praenōtiō previous notion, preconception, innate idea, in post-classical Latin also foreknowledge, either from prae- + nōtiō or from praenōt-, past participial stem of praenōscere to get to know beforehand + -iō.
