Late 16th century; earliest use found in Thomas Twyne (1543–1613), physician. From post-classical Latin praesignification-, praesignificatio action of signifying in advance, indication of the future from classical Latin praesignificāt-, past participial stem of praesignificāre + -iō. In later use partly also from pre- + signification.
