  • 2A person who emigrates from a country which is, or has become, ruled by non-Muslims. Now: specifically one of the Muslim emigrants who left India for Pakistan at or after the time of the Indian Partition in 1947; a descendant of these people.

Late 17th century; earliest use found in Humphrey Prideaux (1648–1724), dean of Norwich and author. From Arabic muhājir (nominative plural muhājirūn, oblique plural muhājirīn (also used colloquially as common-case plural) from hājara to emigrate: compare hegira.
