Mid 17th century; earliest use found in Elizabeth Cary (1585–1639), writer and translator. From post-classical Latin Paulianista member of a sect founded by Paul of Samosata in the 3rd cent. a.d. from Paulianus + -ista, originally after French Paulianiste. Compare Byzantine Greek Παυλιανιστής.
