Early 19th century; earliest use found in Lindley Murray (1745–1826), grammarian and lawyer. From classical Latin paulō post a little after (from paulō by a little, use as adverb of ablative of paulus (also paullus) little, small (from the same Indo-European base as paucus few: see pauci-) + post after: see post-) + future, after post-classical Latin paulo post futurum the future after a little, itself after Hellenistic Greek ὁ μετ' ὀλίγον μέλλων. With the noun compare French paulo-post-futur.
