Late 19th century; earliest use found in George Lewes (1817–1878), writer. From ancient Greek αἴσθησις aesthesis, on the rare analogy of ancient Greek ϕυσικός physic beside ϕύσις physis, since the morphologically regular formation aesthetics was already established in a different sense.
