Mid 17th century; earliest use found in George Havers (fl. 1665). From post-classical Latin exegematicus narrative, explanatory, interpretative (1564; compare exegematicon (noun) narrative poetry) from Hellenistic Greek ἐξηγηματικός of or for narrative, in Byzantine Greek also having a gift for exposition from ἐξηγηματ-, ἐξήγημα explanation + -ικός; originally after French exegematique.
