Mid 18th century; earliest use found in London Gazette Extraordinary. From Urdu janjāl, perhaps a colloquial pronunciation of jazāʼil (from Persian jazāʼil), perhaps influenced by Hindi jañjāl encumbrance (with other formal similarities also suggesting that these words may have been associated with each other).
