Mid 17th century; earliest use found in Richard Watson (d. 1685), Church of England clergyman. Probably partly (i) from classical Latin iūdicātiōn-, iūdicātiō action or power of deciding a case at law, action or faculty of appraising or criticizing from iūdicāt-, past participial stem of iūdicāre to judge + -iō.
