  • A genus of malacostracan crustaceans, originally comprising all the opossum shrimps, but now restricted to a smaller number of related marine and freshwater species. Also (usually in form mysis): a crustacean of this genus (also "mysis shrimp").

Early 19th century; earliest use found in John Vaughan Thompson (1779–1847), surgeon and naturalist. From scientific Latin Mysis, perhaps from Hellenistic Greek μύσις closing of lips or eyes from ancient Greek μύειν to shut the eyes + -σις.
