Late 17th century; earliest use found in Joseph Glanvill (1636–1680), Church of England clergyman. From classical Latin mystēs or its etymon ancient Greek μύστης initiate from the base of μύειν to close + -της, suffix forming agent nouns; the primary sense is probably ‘person vowed to keep silence’. Compare ancient Greek μυεῖν to initiate into mysteries.
