Late 16th century; earliest use found in Thomas Smith (1513–1577), scholar, diplomat, and political theorist. From classical Latin iūstitium cessation from business in the courts of justice, legal vacation from iūs law, right + -stit-, past participial stem of sistere to stand + -ium.
