Mid 18th century; earliest use found in Richard Berenger (bap. 1719, d. 1782), courtier and equestrian. From French mezzair, mézair from Italian mezzaria from mezzo middle + aria air; originally used with reference to the movement being at a height halfway between the terre-à-terre and curvet.
