Origin

Early 17th century; earliest use found in Philemon Holland (1552–1637), translator. From ancient Greek νήτη (Aristotle), contracted form of νεάτη (Cratinus, Plato) the lowest of the three strings forming the musical scale, though the highest in pitch, use as noun of the feminine singular of νέατος lowest from νειός fallow land + -ατος, suffix forming superlatives and ordinal numbers, representing an extended form (with -α- after δέκατος) of the Indo-European suffix forming superlatives and ordinal numbers.
