(1891–1941), Canadian physiologist and surgeon; full name Sir Frederick Grant Banting. With the assistance of C. H. Best, Banting discovered insulin in 1921–2, using it to treat the previously incurable and fatal disease diabetes. Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine (1923, shared with J. J. R. Macleod).
