Ultimately from modern Greek Φανάρι, lit. ‘lighthouse, lantern’ (goes to Turkish fener) from medieval Greek ϕανάριον + -άριον, extended form of -ιον, diminutive suffix); the area was named after a lighthouse on the Golden Horn.
