Mid 17th century; earliest use found in William Wood (fl. 1629–1635), writer on America. From Narragansett nókehick nocake, Massachusett nookhik, lit. ‘thing pounded soft’ (in the Bible translating ‘meal’, ‘flour’, ‘ground corn’).
