Early 20th century; earliest use found in Annals of the Entomological Society of America. From German Prothetelie from ancient Greek προθεῖν to run before (from προ- + θεῖν to run from the same Indo-European base as Sanskrit dhav- to run, flow) + τέλος end + German -ie.
