Late 19th century; earliest use found in County Gentleman. After the name of the Gaiety Theatre, a former London theatre (opened under that name in 1868) famous, especially from the 1890s, for its musical comedies; compare also the title of the popular musical comedy ( A Gaiety Girl) of 1893.
